Hermès Large Bags Size Guide: What Actually Fits in a Birkin 35, Kelly 32, Garden Party & More

Ladies and gentlemen, large bags are officially back. We’ve been seeing micro bags left and right on Instagram for what, the past few years now, and can’t we just admit we’ve all had enough? What is everyone even fitting in those tiny things, or are we all collectively putting up a facade to be part of some sort of clique?

Micro bags aren’t made for actual life. Yes, they’re charming, but an Hermès large bag is what you really need to carry your everyday essentials. Whether you’re considering an Hermès Birkin bag large for the office, weighing a large Hermès tote bag for travel, or simply trying to understand what large means in Hermès terms, we’ll help you figure out exactly which one you need.

So consider this your research, because investing in an extra-large Hermès bag, and make no mistake, it is an investment, requires knowing exactly what you’re getting.

Hermès Birkin 35: The Original Large Birkin

Ah, the Birkin 35, the result of a chance aeroplane encounter between actress Jane Birkin and none other than the CEO of Hermès, CEO Jean-Louis Dumas, in 1984, which quite literally changed history.

The Birkin was originally released in size 35, measuring 35cm x 25cm x 18cm, which translates to roughly 13.8 inches across, 10 inches tall, and 7 inches deep. While smaller Birkins tend to get snatched off shelves faster, the 35 will always and forever remain the classic choice for those who need their bag to work for them, not the other way around.

Here’s what the large Hermès Birkin bag in size 35 fits:

A 13-inch laptop sits comfortably, as well as any tablet  or iPad. You can easily fit your wallet, makeup bag, sunglasses case, passport, small water bottle, notebook, phone charger and other cables and even a light cardigan for chilly nights.

Fitting a 16-inch laptop, however, is stretching it. The Birkin 35 can’t be filled with too many heavy items in one area since it can cause the bottom to sag, especially with softer leathers such as Clemence. The 4-inch handle also means you can either hold it by hand or forearm, no shoulder action here, folks!

The reality is that the Birkin 35  is made for your everyday life. For example, you could pack for a full day of work, including your laptop and still have room for leftover essentials such as snacks, creams and even your makeup! If you are the shortest person who bounces between meetings and working from home, this bag is great!

Birkin 40: When 35 Isn’t Quite Enough

The Birkin 40 measures about 40cm x 30cm x 21cm, a substantial size for a bag if you’d ask us! It’s often referred to as the Travel Birkin, and they’re not wrong.

You can snuggly fit a 15-inch laptop, files, documents, multiple folders, a water bottle, toiletries and even a change of clothes if you’re stopping somewhere overnight. The Hermès large Birkin bag in size 40 is the perfect bridge between daily carry and short-trip travel.

We’ll put it out there that the Birkin 40 works fairly well on taller frames. If you’re a petite lady, you might feel like the Birkin 40 is simply too big for your physique. But, if you’re looking for a room without investing in the HAC line, the Birkin 40 delivers! Collectors have been sleeping on the Birkin 40 for far too long, but it’s time the world sees it for what it truly is!

The Elegant Paradox of Kelly 32

The Kelly 32 measures 32cm x 23cm x 10.5cm, but there’s a catch. On paper, you’ll see it offers generous depth, but in practice, the trapezoidal shape can cause some hiccups.

You can easily fit an iPad Pro, notebooks, a wallet, your passport, sunglasses and even a small water bottle, but the narrow opening prevents you from fitting a laptop.

Many people assume that the Kelly 32 is equivalent to the Birkin 35 in terms of capacity, but it isn’t. You’ll get spaciousness for soft goods such as pouches, that’s for sure, but rigid items will forever remain problematic. If you opt for the Kelly 32 in Retourne, it’s more forgiving and allows you to fit more inside.

Kelly 35: Kelly Elegance Mixed With Real Capacity

Up next is the Kelly 35, measuring at about 35cm x 24cm x 12cm. You’ll notice that in this version, the 13-inch MacBook fits perfectly, and you can even throw in a toiletry pouch, a water bottle, chargers and cables for you ladies constantly on the go plus pretty much any other small essentials.

The reason we love the large Hermès bag, the Kelly 35, is that it offers you everything you’d need in a purse: great capacity without sacrificing the structured silhouette of the Kelly that we all love so much. It also comes with a detachable shoulder strap that adds to the versatility that we don’t get to see in Birkins.

Garden Party 36: The Perfect Tote

This Hermès large tote bag, Garden Party 36, measures 36cm x 26cm x 17cm, and it’s designed with an open-top that allows you maximum accessibility and a super generous capacity to fit pretty much all you need.

You can fit your laptop, water bottle, makeup pouch, book, wallet, and anything else, because the Garden Party 36 isn’t one to complain. But that’s not why we love it so much. The Garden Party 36 is ACTUALLY available. Yep, no waitlists, no purchase history, no waiting — just a bag ready to be swooped off the shelves!

It’s also worth noting here that the canvas-and-leather versions weigh a lot less than all-leather Birkins and Kellys, so even if you’re filling it up to the brim, you’re still not matching the weight. It’s the perfect relaxed luxury bag you’d need to transition between the office to weekend.

But, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows here, folks. The trade-offs include that the open top results in no security, and the side snaps cinch the bag narrower without really protecting what’s inside. If you’re travelling, you’d need some bag organisers, and it can get exhausting to carry around.

Garden Party 49: The Weekend Essential

The Garden Party 49 Voyage measures 49cm x 35cm x 25cm, and it’s a PROPER weekend luxury luggage bag in the form of a tote.

If you’re travelling for a couple of days, you can easily fit a change of clothes for 2-3 days, your laptop, accessories, trainers, snacks, water and anything else you need for a relaxed weekend trip. For frequent weekend travellers who value Hermès quality over traditional luggage, the Garden Party 49 beautifully solves a very specific need.

HAC 40 & HAC 50 AKA The Heritage Travel Bags

Haut à Courroies, translated as “High Belts”, originated in the 1800s as Hermès’ bag for carrying equestrian saddles and riding boots. They’re a lot like standard Birkins, save for the taller construction and longer handles.

The HAC 40 measures 40cm x 32cm x 21cm and fits 6-inch laptops that won’t fit standard Birkins. Travel essentials, clothes for 2-3 days, and a full toiletry kit. It’s the perfect bridge between daily professional use and short-trip travel.

The HAC 50 measures 50cm x 38cm x 25cm, and it handles full weekend luggage. Jackets, multiple shoe pairs, laptop plus files, complete toiletries, quite literally EVERYTHING!

It’s worth noting here that HAC bags are considered rarer than standard Birkins, so acquiring one would require bending backwards. But if you NEED maximum space, you’d be willing to go to all that trouble.

Picotin 22: Compact Bucket, Surprising Capacity

The Picotin 22 measures 22cm x 21cm x 18cm, and its bucket shape creates more usable volume than structured bags of similar dimensions.

It holds an iPhone Pro Max, a sunglasses case, a small book, a makeup pouch, a wallet, and a small water bottle. Much like the Garden Party, it’s actually available to purchase without waitlists!

Lindy 30: The Organised Medium-Large

Measuring 30cm x 19cm x 15cm, the Lindy 30 offers a unique slouchy structure with dual compartments. iPhone, wallet, sunglasses, makeup bag, and travel documents all fit. The side pockets are pretty great for organisation, but they won’t accommodate laptops, and the soft construction means water bottles don’t work well.

Bolide 31: Structured Elegance

The Bolide 31 measures 31cm x 23cm x 16cm, featuring a bowling bag structure with a zip-top closure that delivers organised space for your phone, wallet, passport, sunglasses, makeup pouch, notebook, and light toiletries. You’ll have to keep in mind that it’s not designed for laptops or bulky items!

How to Pack Large Hermès Bags

If you’re not packing your bag well, you’ll ruin it completely. Here are some of our best tips on packing a large Hermès bag.

  • Always use structured organisers! These help distribute the weight evenly and help maintain shape when empty
  • Always keep laptops flat instead of wedging them vertically!
  • Distribute the weight across the bag instead of concentrating it on one side
  • Stop overfilling corners, especially in Sellier versions! Those crisp edges are meant to maintain their shape.
  • If you’re not using the bag for a certain period of time, remove the contents inside since prolonged weight can end up causing shape loss.
  • Make sure to take into consideration the leather type when choosing your Hermès large bag.

Finding Your Match!

The right large Hermès bag depends entirely on your actual daily needs, not aspirational use. The most beautiful bag becomes a wardrobe orphan if it doesn’t function for your real life. Which one are you going to be claiming as your own?
