Hermès Neo Madere Bag: The Ultimate Guide to This Rare Collector’s Piece

Some bags announce themselves with runway fanfare or celebrity sightings. Others slip quietly into the maison’s catalogue, appearing without any drama.

The Hermès Neo Madere bag belongs firmly in that category. It’s a refined design that’s been inspired by heritage and intended for collectors who are looking for something beyond the regular Birkin and Kelly.

Don’t get us wrong, we love the duo, but maybe, just maybe, it’s time for a change.

If you’ve been contemplating whether or not to add this piece to your collection, you, my friend, have stumbled upon the right guide. We’re going to let you in on all the secrets: Neo Madere’s design, pricing, and availability.

Hermès Neo Madere

What Is the Hermès Neo Madere Bag?

The Hermès Neo Madere bag launched as part of the Fall/Winter 2022 collection and drew inspiration from a single decidedly ‘unglamourousungalmourous’ source. It was none other than the 1960s Madere laundry bag.

Because of this heritage, the Neo Madere features an elongated, low-slung, minimalist design. Don’t be fooled, this bag is most definitely not engineered for maximum visibility. It’s refined, understated luxury at its best. It’s the kind of luxury Hermès does incredibly well, even when they’re not exactly creating recognisable icons.

In fact, according to Hermès official descriptions, the Neo Madere is an ‘atypical and visionary’ interpretation of vintage travel bags. It’s crazy to think about how Hermès took a completely forgotten and sidelined functional design and redefined it through Hermès’s lens.

What we got is a bag that feels both familiar and fresh.

Design and Features of the Hermès Neo Madere Bag

The Hermès Neo Madere bag comes out to be 44 cm x 19 cm x 19 cm, which is 17.3 inches x 7.5 inches x 7.5 inches for you ladies in the States. These proportions create an elongated and rather horizontal silhouette that’s almost reminiscentalmost a reminiscent of a carryall than a traditional handbag.

Shape and Silhouette

Since the Neo Madere features a low, horizontal structure, it recalls vintage travel cases from the past that used to be elongated, softly structure and intentionally understated. Some collectors even note similarities between the Neo Madere and the shoulder Birkin’s profile, while others argue it reminds them of Jean Louis Dumas’s era 1984 experimental designs.

SinceSine the bag features a horizontal profile, it’s better suited to either hand carry or tucked underneath the arm instead of your regular shoulder wear. It’s worth notingboting that there’s no detachable strap, so you’re not going to be able to wear it across the body. This is an intentionally hand-carried piece.

Handles

Neo Madere’s arguably most distinctive feature are its thick, rigid hand-shaped handles that have been made from none other than Hunter cowhide leather, directly inspired by Hermès traveling trunks. Since Hunter cowhide leather is highly durable, it ages beautifully over time and is also scratch-resistant.

Dare we remind you ladies, these handles are totally NOT soft or flexible. That’s precisely the intention. They’re structured and are built to withstand long, across the ocean sort of voyages (hello Moana!)

Closure and Hardware

The Neo Madere features a full zip closure at the top, which is made from entirely leather. The leather zip pulls threads through a metal loop and can be secured with a cadena padlock, similarthat’s similar to the oh-so iconic Hermès Bolide.

The hardware on this comes in palladium plating, whichthat looks both cool and restrained. There’s also a Hunter cowhide clochette, a key charm, that completes the look.

Interior

With the Neo Madere you get one interior pocket that keeps all your essentials organised. Be warned, this bag isn’t built for maximum organisation, it prefers clean lines over an internal structure.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The bag body uses Togo calfskin, one of Hermès’s most loved grain leather that develops natural slouch over time with wear. Togo’s slightly pebbled texture also provides impeccable durability whilst maintaining softness.

The handles and clochette use contrasting Hunter cowhide, adding texture and the palladium-plated hardware throughout keeps the overall aesthetic cool and modern.

Every Neo Madere is hand-stitched using Hermès’s signature saddle stitch technique, the same method used on Birkin and Kelly bags, so rest assured you’re getting the same structural integrity and longevity.

Hermès Neo Madere Bag Vs Other Hermès Bags

vs. Birkin 35

The Birkin 35 measures 35 cm x 25 cm x 18 cm. The Neo Madere is actually longer (44 cm vs 35 cm) but notably less tall (19 cm vs 25 cm). It’s a horizontal format where Birkin is more square.

vs. Bolide 31

The Bolide 31 measures 31 cm x 23 cm x 16 cm. The Neo Madere extends considerably longer whilst maintaining similar height and depth. The Bolide offers shoulder carry options; the Neo Madere doesn’t.

vs. Kelly 32

The Kelly 32 measures 32 cm x 23 cm x 10.5 cm. The Neo Madere is significantly wider and deeper, creating a completely different carrying capacity.

Our Honest Hermès Neo Madere Review: Is This Bag Worth It?

Reviewing the Neo Madere means understanding what it is, and isn’t, designed to be.

The Good

You won’t see another bag quite like this in the market. Its unique and elongated proportions means it’s unlike any other bag you’ve seen. It’s also a rare collector’s piece, so owning the Neo Madere means owning something that’s genuinely unique.

How can we forget the heritage this bag brings to the table? The 1960s laundry-bag inspiration adds narrative depth.

The Not-So Good

The Neo Madere has no shoulder strap, which means you’ll be limited to hand-carry only, which definitely limits your everyday functionality. This isn’t your grab-and-go commute bag. Additionally, if you’re someone who likes flaunting your luxury (nothing wrong in that, ladies!) the Neo Madere most definitely doesn’t announce Hermès quite like a Birkin or a Kelly does.

What’s the Verdict?

The Neo Madere makes for an incredible collector’s piece, but it’s definitely not maximally practical. But if you’re more interested in building a collectioncollections that’s both rare and unique, this piece is the perfect piece to your collection!

Who Should Buy the Hermès Neo Madere Bag?

Let’s get one thing straight, the Neo Madere isn’t for everyone, and maybe that’s the entire point.

It’s perfect for existing Hermès collectors who’ve already dipped their toes in luxury waters and are now itching to get their hands on a new, understated piece. If you appreciate heritage and storytelling over mainstream recognition, this is the bag for you.

This isn’t a good purchase if this is your first Hermès handbag or if you’re looking for an everyday, practical bag. Also, if you like walking down the street, knowing people know you have Hermès handbag, the Neo Madere doesn’t deliver.

The Neo Madere is decidedly not your first Hermès bag. It’s a refined addition to already-established collections.

Neo Madere, New Perspective

The Hermès Neo Madere bag is all about genuine originality within heritage constraints.

Hermès didn’t need to create this bag. The Birkin, Kelly, Constance, and Bolide handle most customer needs beautifully. But the Neo Madere wasn’t created out of need, it was created out of want. For collectors seeking pieces beyond the expected.

This isn’t a bag everyone will understand or appreciate. It’s a bag for those who already know.
