For those who find themselves on the periphery of the luxury accessories world, the idea of putting your name on a waitlist just to buy a bag can seem fairly strange.<\/span><\/p>\n

But this is the norm for those luxury handbag lovers who want to own something as iconic and as prestigious as an Herm\u00e8s Birkin \u2013 arguably one of the most famous, coveted bags in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The waitlist for an Herm\u00e8s Birkin bag can take years. What\u2019s more, buyers can\u2019t simply walk into a shop and put their name on the list. Doing so takes time, and requires an established relationship with Birkin sales associates, especially if you are selective about the kind of Birkin you want.<\/span><\/p>\n

In short, she had ideas for the perfect weekend bag, but couldn\u2019t find what she wanted on the market.<\/span><\/p>\n

And so, Dumas took her ideas straight back to his design team at Herm\u00e8s and set about creating what is ultimately the world\u2019s most famous bag. Named after Jane Birkin herself, the Birkin bag was introduced in 1984 and became an instant hit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The bag famously takes upwards of 18 hours to make, owing to the rigorous handcrafting that goes into each and every Birkin. On top of that, <\/span>artisan crafters and bag makers have to train with Herm\u00e8s for five years<\/span><\/a> before they are given a Birkin to tackle themselves \u2013 due largely to the traditional techniques required to bring each bag to life, and the incredible attention to detail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not just the lengthy manufacturing process that plays a role in the Birkin\u2019s popularity. The quality of the materials, the popularity amongst celebrities and style icons, and the unique history all add to the coveted nature of each Birkin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What Is the Waitlist?<\/span><\/h2>\n

And so, we come to <\/span>the waitlist<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The waitlist is the way that buyers can start the process of getting a brand-new, authentic Birkin bag.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In short, prospective buyers can reach out to boutiques and stores that sell brand-new Herm\u00e8s bags, sharing their most coveted style and the type of bag that they are looking for. Sales associates will then have lists of buyers who are interested in the different Birkin bags that get released and arrive in store, and will contact the buyers who they feel they might suit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are not necessarily buyers who want to wear and own that exact Birkin themselves \u2013 rather, they wait for something to become available, and then sell it on to a local reseller for cash or a part exchange for the bag they really want (second hand).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, there are the buyers who stick around on the waitlist for years, waiting for their perfect Birkin to become available so that they can buy it directly from the source. For these buyers, patience is at the heart of their buying experience, as they wait for the perfect bag.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alternative Ways to Buy an Authentic Birkin\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

If putting your name on the waitlist for a Birkin sounds like too arduous a process for you, then there are other ways of getting yourself a bag.<\/span><\/p>\n

Heading to a <\/span>local reseller boutique<\/span><\/a> is by far the best option. Not only do they hold stock from other buyers further up the waitlist, who have been offered Birkins that they have then sold on straight away, but they also provide authentication and valuation services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Heading to a luxury auction<\/a> is another option, though the competitive nature of these auction houses tends to push the prices higher and results in buyers paying more for their bag.<\/span><\/p>\n

Suffice to say, if you are lucky enough to live close to a reputable boutique reseller, or you are happy to travel to find your perfect accessory, this tends to be the broadest option.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is a Birkin Right for You?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Of course, you may find \u2013 upon further research \u2013 that you are just as enamoured by other Herm\u00e8s bags and accessories. If this is the case, then buying a Kelly or Constance, or even one of the more accessible models like a Picotin or Evelyne, might be a great way to bring the timeless style and prestige of Herm\u00e8s into your wardrobe.<\/span><\/p>\n

While all of these bags are coveted and sought after, surrounded by high demand and a very limited stock level, they are considerably easier to find than the Birkin \u2013 with much shorter waitlists!<\/span><\/p>\n
